Elizabeth MacDonald

Garden Art Gallery A woodland setting with three tile towers --

"Through clay, I express my connection to the natural world. Each work speaks to the process of change, whether through the appearance of age or the spontananeity of gesture. Lured by color and texture, ancient in feeling, I often express these Qualities through the use of fragmentation. Small surface elements draw the viewer into a larger context, where hundreds of parts interact to form a whole. Organized as a grid, torn and textured squares compose a rythmic pattern which balances the energy of the organic."

"MYSTERIOUS AND ARCHETYPAL..."
"... MacDonald makes ceramic paintings out of dozens of tiny rough textured squares attached to a wood backing and forming a grid. The end result resembles the oatmeal texture of the handmade paper grids the well known artist Chuck Close creates. MacDonalds subjects are simple and architectural... the colors are lush and vary subtly... The shapes are mysterious and archetypal, and the ragged edges of the tiny squares suggest something ancient.".

Three Tile Towers: a public installation rising in front of trees and a Greek revival building.

"MAJESTIC TILE CONSTRUCTIONS..." "Elizabeth MacDonalds majestic tile constructions, that are both painterly ceramic canvases and architectural landmarks, ...take shape either as freestanding columns, shimmering with the translucence of glass, or wall panels with the grace of an oriental screen."

'In-Sites'
METROPOLIS

...When Asked to talk about a favorite commission, ceramist Elizabeth Macdonald throws up her hands. "I can't single out just one," she says. "...Each project is such a different experience and together they combine to build up a wonderful kind of technical repertoire."
Still, Elizabeth does mention one residential project as being particularly fulfilling. In this case, she created an 18- foot tile fireplace around a swimming pool. The satisfaction, she believes, came from the unique combination of people and elements. "Everyone was so enthusiastic; I felt like part of a cooperative, collaborative adventure... And it was artistically satisfying, too, with elements of sculpture and painting within an architectural framework..."
